My hubby and I went to a charity dinner and dance last Saturday night. The meal was served buffet style. There was a couple going through the line in front of us who were both seriously overweight. As we went through the line, they both picked up various items and ate them as they went through. We went past the desserts first and they both had two or three cookies each, along with a mini cheesecake, Then there were chicken and beef cabobs. They each sampled at least one of these Anything that was finger food was sampled as they went through the line. By the time we got to the end of the buffet, they had both had a full meal and desert. They both put a little bit of vegetables and rice on their plates and then filled the rest of the space with salad. They topped off the meal with a bowl of soup.
I'm relatively certain when this couple sat down to eat, they truly felt they were not eating very much, but if the calories would have been counted up they would have been surprised.
This is so very common in our country. We seriously underestimate our portion sizes and the amount of calories we are consuming. It would be easy for any of us to fool ourselves into thinking we consumed less calories if we ate most of them before we even sat down to eat. It's easy to lose track of how many chips we have popped into our mouths if we are mindlessly munching on them in front of the TV'. And it's easy to overeat when every restaurant serves up huge portions
If we want to become healthier, we have to stop fooling ourselves. We have to know how many calories we should be eating and we have to take responsibilityfor paying attention during meals and snacks. If we don't learn to do this, we will be fooling ourselves into disease and disability.
