A new normal for me is having an office all to myself. It's nice in a way, but I do miss Holly my office mate. A new normal is working with my new partner in crime. Matt is Holly's age and has a young son not much older than Holly's son. He coaches the girl's volleyball team and has taught middle school kids for about 3 or 4 years. I'm glad that my new situation parallels my old in some ways.
A new normal is having students that are more enthusiastic about Physical Education. It will take me a while to get used to the fact that these kids don't already know the drill. Some of the things I take for granted are brand new to them. The pace for me in middle school is much faster. There is less time between classes, less time in the locker room and definitely more groups to teach. I teach new kids every two days, so I have more total students than I did in high school. In a year, I taught about 500 high school kids. Matt and I will teach about 900 middle schoolers. My feet were hurting after a full day on them today. I really didn't sit down at all except to eat lunch.

A new normal is the fact that this age group is more "watched over" than high school kids. They don't have the amount of freedom through the school day that the kids in high school have.
So here's to forging a new normal. Good luck to all teachers out there who are doing the same.
