Friday at school I got an e-mail from my assistant principal that the night custodian had been out all week. She wanted me to check and see if anything in my area needed some custodial attention and she would make sure it got done. I left her know that the bathrooms in the girls' locker room needed some attention. I left for the weekend and didn't think about it until I was back here Monday morning. When I got here the bathrooms still looked like they needed attention and now we were very low on toilet paper. I e-mailed my assistant principal and again and left her know. Now I'm pretty sure she talked to someone Friday about it unless my e-mail got to her too late in the afternoon. About twenty minutes later I hear some high heels click-clicking their way into the locker room (highly unusual as middle school girls rarely, if ever, wear high heels to school). I turned around to see my assistant principal bringing about three rolls of toilet paper into the locker room so we would have enough for the day.
Now this would NEVER have happened at the school where I previously taught. The night custodians may have gotten a nasty gram from the principal that evening. The day custodian may have had to round up some girls in the hall to bring me some TP when we were totally out (after I flagged him down in the hallway). Most likely we would have muddled through without the proper amount of bathroom supplies. My point is that at MCMS we have built a "We're all in this together" mentality and that has come from the top down. I would like to go on written record to convey how much I appreciate that!
